“Oh I have no doubts about Madison, I meant the boys. Some of them can be quite a handful.” She smiled. Jean nodded after Kendra spoke of their agenda. “Sounds correct.” She said. “Sounds like a lot of fun, too.” She chuckled.
Jean thought for a moment. “Knowing Logan he’d take the opportunity for a guy’s night out. Which might be fun for them.” She smiled at the thought. She liked the idea of both the girls and the guys having fun their own way.
She sipped her tea and folded her hands. “We have to get a huge cake for the party.” She smiled. “Everyone seems to love cake.” She said, knowing from experience that once the smell roams the school the kids start coming down.
Kendra chuckled. “I’m sure Madison can handle them. But at any rate, we’ll just have to see. I count my chickens after they hatch.” She sipped more of her tea, looking thoughtful.
“Guys’ night? Hahaha, now there’s a mental image. My foster brother Jem would come home from those looking like some awesome ninja biker.” She giggled at the memories. “Now he likes that look, since it seems to attract the ladies. Or at least the one that counts.” She was glad he’d finally found someone he wanted to marry and start a family with, but that left her thinking about her own life and what she wanted from it.
There are no easy answers. And it is best to be patient. Wanting it now does nothing but stress you out. Let it come like the waves of the sea. She couldn’t help but smile at how much that sounded like Jem, who’d spent a whole two years in Tibet learning deep meditation techniques from the monks up there. He was always so zen, but there was a fire underneath that if you woke it, you were doomed.
Jean chuckled and nodded. ” I have no doubt that Madison could handle whatever the guys could throw at her.” She said. She sipped her tea and continued listening to Kendra. “A guy’s night would be something to see.” She said.
She nodded as Kendra talked about her foster brother and smiled softly. It was great to be in the company of her friends. She had always liked to be social and since Logan she’d come out of her shell a bit more. She set her tea down. “It’s great to find someone that you can share everything with.” Jean thought of Logan, missing him. He’d never been gone this long before and she hoped he was okay. “And a ninja biker sounds very unique.” She said. “By the way, The Professor asked me to tell you that he is having a package delivered to the school for you.” She said. “It should be here in a day or two.”

Jean smiled. “That sounds perfect.” She said, sipping from her cup. She nodded listening to Kendra speak about weather and chuckled. Jean loved the thought of a surprise party for Storm and absolutely loved the thought of it being by a pond.
She nodded. “Mhmm. I’m sure that Madison would love to help out.” She said. Jean thought about the name Madison, it was pretty to her. It was a good name for a child, should she ever have one. She had to remind herself that it was not the time for baby fever and focused back on their conversation. Jean chuckled at the wink. “Yes, some of the boys here seem very attracted to her. I just hope we don’t have any trouble with that later.” She said with a smile before sipping her tea.
“Pfft, I doubt it. Madison’s very responsible.” Kendra leaned back against the granite counter top, finishing off her tea. She was glad her mind was busy with surprise birthday party plans, else wise it would go back to all the previous subjects that were not good to dwell on for long periods of time. She twirled a strand of blue hair around her index finger. “So our agenda is: Girl’s night, surprise party, and… um… having fun.” She grinned at Jean, glad she had some time to relax. Of course it was made better by the fact that she could spend that time with friends.

Jean nodded. “Yeah, some kids think it’s boring. I don’t read their minds, just their body language. But I think that they like it over all.” She said. Jean nodded and chuckled softly at the comment about Storm liking anything metallic.
Jean smiled. “I won’t say a word. I promise.” At the mention of a surprise party Jean nodded her head vigorously. “Yes! That sounds like a great idea. She will love it. Storm likes surprises.” She said excitedly.
Jean got up, took both their cups and poured the hot water onto the tea bags. She walked carefully back to the table and set the cups down. She added cream and sugar to hers and waited for it to cool before taking a sip. “For the surprise party I think I can get her out of the manor for a while and I’m sure the students will help decorate, or at least the girls anyway.” She smiled.
She could picture gold and silver streamers hanging from the trees in the garden, lots of glowing lamps Storm was so fond of placed in the pond, and tables full of snack foods everyone could enjoy. “Maybe we could set it all up in the gardens area? It’s outside of the manor and of course we wouldn’t have to worry about bad weather, since this is Storm we’re talking about.” She accepted her cup back, taking a long drink from it.
“I think the girls and the younger kids would love to help with the decorating. Young Madison has a knack for making things pretty, so you should definitely have her in charge. Plus she’s a sweetie and the boys will do anything to get her attention.” She giggled behind a hand, winking at Jean.

Jean smiled. “Yeah. They knew and a few kids helped to contain it. Although one tried to get it to spread to get out of class.” She chuckled. “I’d have liked to think that this school was more fun than the others.” She said.
Jean nodded. “I’m sure it’ll be a big hit. I think Storm’s favorite color, or one of them, is silver. I’m not sure though.” She said. “But either way, the girls’ day will be very relaxing for all of us.” Jean thought of how Storm wanted a day to relax and, who wouldn’t after all the drama that goes on with mutant affairs. Jean sure needed a break from it too, of course that would be after her seminar and visit to D.C.
Jean looked at her cup and back at Kendra. “Would you like some more tea? There’s still plenty of hot water left.” She said. Jean was a big tea drinker, although she did like coffee too.
“It is fun, but some kids don’t know how to appreciate it. Or they think mistakenly it’s boring, I don’t know. Not like I’m psychic.” She shrugged, tucking a strand of blue hair behind her ear. She was silent for a moment, then smiled. “Yeah, Storm just likes anything metallic. Don’t tell her, but for her birthday I got her some golden gloves. Found them on the internet and immediately thought of her. We should plan a surprise party.”
She looked down at her cup, then smiled. “Sure, more tea would be great. Thanks, Jean.”

Jean smiled. “It would be interesting if he did.” She said. Jean thought of what Logan might actually do, or rather do again. She thought of the time in The Danger Room with him and she knew it would be one of those nights again if he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. Though, what no one suspected was that Logan did have a softer side. Well, no one but those closest to him.
She shook her head. “No, not really. Other than that it’s been calm. Well. minus the fire in the chemistry classroom. One of the students had a little mishap. But it got taken care of.” Jean replied. “This girl’s night sounds better and better the more I think of it.” She smiled.
“A fire? Haha, yeah that’s happened plenty of times before. By now I’m sure everyone knows where the extinguisher is and how to use it, if the sink is too far away.” Kendra remembered the mishaps that had occurred during her school days with a fond smile. Those had been good times overall, and she wouldn’t trade them for anything. “Definitely needed. Get our minds off of everything and just do girly stuff. I found this new polish while over in ‘Stralia that’s a really pretty metallic silver. I think it’ll be the most favored color at the party.”
Jean smiled. “Yeah. They knew and a few kids helped to contain it. Although one tried to get it to spread to get out of class.” She chuckled. “I’d have liked to think that this school was more fun than the others.” She said.

Jean nodded, listening to Kendra. She knew time away was necessary. “When I take time away I miss the manor too. She said.
She chuckled softly, knowing what it was like to expect the unexpected. She knew first hand some of the things that existed in other worlds, so she knew that anything was possible.” Anything can happen anywhere. There are worlds that have things you would not expect. It’s amazing.” She said with a smile.
Jean took a sip of her tea and blushed. She laughed softly ad she set her tea down. “I think he’d be surprised if I cut my hair again. Not that I want to cut my hair. I like my hair longer.” She said. Jean would never admit to it but being with Logan had given her more of a wild side in private. “We could do something like curling out hair or dying it.” She chuckled.
“Yes, life can be quite amazing. And full of sweet surprises.” Kendra agreed, smiling. She thought about her loves for a moment, looking forward to reuniting with them some time in the very near future. Jean brought her back to the present and thinking about girls’ nights instead. “I like my hair longer too, though it ought to be trimmed soon before I start looking like a cavewoman.” She snickered a bit on the mental image. “I don’t need to dye my hair, it’s already a fun color, but curling it sounds like a plan.”
Jean smiled. “Yes it is. I like the surprises.” She said. Jean didn’t like the bad surprises in life so much as she knew that the bad had to come with the good. She chuckled softly at her own mental image of Kendra the cavewoman. “I’m sure you’d still catch eyes as a cavewoman.” She said. “I think I’d like curls. They certainly do look nice for special occasions.” Jean took a breath and smiled. “And what’s more special than driving men wild?” She said, taking a sip of her tea.
“Oh I’m sure.” Kendra agreed in amusement, though she had no plans to look like a cavewoman… unless it was for Halloween. She considered Jean for a moment, then nodded. “Curls would frame your face very prettily. Logan will take one look at you with them and be wanting to whisk you off to some remote island somewhere.” It might not classify as wild, but it was romantic. A girl never minded when her man did something like that, though it had yet to happen for Kendra.
She was far too busy these days anyways, though that didn’t stop her from thinking about other things, which she hesitated to consider might actually happen.
Yet Shakespeare cautions in Measure for Measure: ‘Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we might oft win, by fearing to attempt.’ She reminded herself with the softest of sighs, a hint of a smile on her lips at her unconcious use of the Elizabethan writer’s works. And like the song in The Man Who Knew Too Much says: ‘Que sera, sera… whatever will be, will be.’ Shaking her head to clear it, she returned her attention to Jean. “Anything else been happening around here?”
Jean smiled. “It would be interesting if he did.” She said. Jean thought of what Logan might actually do, or rather do again. Jean was in the lab working on a few notes for a conference she would be attending in Washington DC for mutant rights. She was focusing on the genome that set apart mutants from the rest of the population.
She stopped writing a minute to look through the microscope and then jotted a few notes down. Jean looked up and paused, sensing someone.
She put the notes away in a hurry to meet them at the door. Normally, Jean wouldn’t rush to the door but she knew this person and was glad to see her again.
Jean exited the lab and walked up the stairs from the infirmary. She walked even further, passed the common room and to the front door.
She smiled. “Kendra. Hello.” She said. “Welcome back. It’s been so long. How have you been?” Jean asked, moving to the side to let in the woman. “Would you like some tea?”
Kendra was exhausted from her long trip back to Australia to get some mutants, but it was rewarding to see them fitting in. She’d been more shy, less sure of herself when she’d first gotten here and had ducked into corners of the mansion often when she saw someone she didn’t know. Most of the teachers learned to lure her out with chocolate and kind words until she figured out that no one there would harm her.
That felt like ages ago, and she’d made so much progress since then. She grinned as the door opened to reveal her good friend. “Jean! Hi!” She gave the red head a tight hug. “It’s good to see you too! Oh, I’ve been pretty good. Missed this place like crazy though.” She laughed as she came in, taking off her jacket and hanging it on the coat rack. “Oooh tea? That sounds lovely. How’ve you been since I left?”
Jean hugged Kendra. She gave a soft smile and chuckled. “The manor grows on you.” She said, closing the door. Jean walked with Kendra to the main kitchen and got out a kettle and filled it with water.
She set the kettle on the stove and sat down. “I’ve been good. Things with Logan have been good.” She said. ” How have you been?” She asked. Jean used her powers to levitate two cups down so she didn’t have to get up from the conversation.
“Yes, it does. It helps that it’s been my home for… a few years now.” Kendra smiled, tucking a strand of blue hair behind her ear. The kitchen was a welcome sight, with it’s silver fridge full of good food, and cabnets with snacks and table settings.
She hopped up on to a stool, sighing contentedly as Jean joined her. “I’m glad to hear things are going well for the two of you. We were all wondering when you’d get together.” She winked with a soft giggle, nudging her friend. “Can’t complain, really. I can’t wait to see Charles and Hank, though. I’ve missed them both so much. They’ve been in my dreams quite a bit.” She blushed, indicating what sort of dreams they’d been. “Most of them I can see happening… but the others… I don’t know.”
Jean heard the teapot whistle and levitated the water into the cups. After finding out she was the phoenix she had taken a while to learn to control it but she eventually did and now she felt better than ever.
Jean blushed and smiled. “It was a rough start but I feel better with Logan.” She admitted. Jean blushed deeper when she figured out what Kendra meant. “I’m sure that if they will happen if you want them too.” She said, encouraging Kendra as she brought the tea over.
She brought over the sugar and cream and two spoons. “I’m glad you’re back. The manor has been kinda quiet, asides from the students, of course.” She chuckled.
“Good, I’m glad you guys are working it out.” Kendra withheld a sigh at Jean’s later comment, smiling a bit. “Yeah, maybe one of these days, in the far distant future. Right now my focus needs to be on what’s really happening.” Of course, this was harder than it sounded, especially when it seemed to be one of the only things she could think about. None of her usual techniques were working, so that meant it was time for something different.
She took her tea cup and spoon from where it floated in the air before her, taking her tea straight up without cream or sugar. “I imagine it would be, what with us all taking turns going around the world gathering lost mutants, like we once were. It’s nice to give back, now that I can.” She smiled more, drinking some of her tea and sighing at the taste. She loved all kinds of tea, but Earl Grey was her absolute favorite. “But I’m really glad to be back. Now we can have girls’ nights again with Storm.”
Jean grabbed a spoon. She added cream and sugar into her tea.”Focusing on what’s happening is great. I tend to have to do that as well.” She said. Jean stirred her tea and took a sip from the cup.
She smiled. “Yes, I think it’s Storm and Scott’s turn to gather mutants. Or well, Scott volunteered to go with Storm.” She said. Jean paused for a moment and smiled. “It is nice to help out. Next week I’ll see if I can’t pick up a few mutants at the conference I’m going to.” She said.
Jean smiled. Earl Grey was her favorite tea as well. She knew Kendra well enough to know that they shared the same taste in tea. “That would be great! I’m sure Storm would love that.” She said. “It’s been a while since we had a girls’ night. Too much of a while.” She said. She liked the thought of just girls hanging out. Logan had been away for a week searching for not only more mutants, but maybe more memories. She knew it was important to him to do that so she would wait for him to come home to her when he was ready.
“So glad it’s not just me.” Kendra laughed lightly, crossing her ankles. She brushed some of her hair back from her face, noting how long it was getting. She wondered if it was time for a trim, or if she should let it get even longer. She liked it when it flowed down her back, but of course she couldn’t let it get too long. No sense having it catching on things or becoming unmanagable.
Her eye brows raised as she took another drink of her tea. “Scott volunteered to go with her? Well, at least he’s making an effort. Where was Nightcrawler in all this? Or was he off tracking down those mutants that had been in the circus with him?” She leaned back against the counter behind her, the polished granite feeling cool beneath her elbows.
“Great, we’ll plan something as soon as possible. I miss getting my nails painted and watching those really sappy romance movies with you guys. Oh and the really gorey movies too. Those were a hoot.” She chuckled softly, remembering how rediculously fake all those films had been. “And we totally need to come up with new, eye-catching hair styles for one another that no one else will ever see.” She grinned over the brim of her cup, taking another drink. “Unless we want them to, of course.”
Jean chuckled softly. “Nope. Definitely not just you.” She said. Jean sipped her tea and set it down on the counter. She nodded. “Mhmm. I think he needed some time away from the manor.” She said. Jean had accidentally read Scott’s mind, he needed time away from Jean and Logan. He had been really hurt by Jean’s leaving him the day before their wedding, but he needed to stay at the manor for the team and because the professor wanted him to. The X-Men needed a leader and Scott would have to deal with his feelings.
She smiled. “Nightcrawler went looking for mutants from his circus days. He’ll bring them back here, I’m guessing.” She said. Jean nodded. “Movies would be nice. I’m sure Storm would agree too. She loves the horror films. I’m more of a sappy romance comedy girl, myself. Though I do watch action movies with Logan.” She chuckled.
Jean smiled, softly chuckling. “Of course I’d want to catch Logan’s eye. It’s always been fun to make him stop where he is and stare.” She blushed.
“Time away can be good.” She mused, as relaxing. “I know being away from here makes me glad that this is my home. The world out there is crazy, and it’s not mutant-friendly most of the time. Even if they don’t know what you are, there can still be problems.” She flashed to her childhood in various foster homes, where her “siblings” would often cut her hair with whatever they could get their hands on. If you found photos from those days, her hair was always choppy and uneven, but she usually wasn’t in one home or school district long enough to be part of the school portraits.
“But they aren’t without hope. My lifeguard friends in Australia always had my back, no matter what. Then again, you can see strange things out in the Woop Woop. Simon swore up and down he met a form of the Easter Bunny when out camping one time, and you know what? We all believed him because it’s the land down under. Anything can happen.” She smiled as she spoke, missing Australia just a bit even though she’d just come from there. All her friends had been so surprised how much she’d changed, though they’d all laughed it off and slapped her on the back, telling her they’d known she had it in her.
She giggled at Jean’s words. “Of course you do. We all want that for the men we’re with.”
Jean nodded, listening to Kendra. She knew time away was necessary. “When I take time away I miss the manor too. She said.
She chuckled softly, knowing what it was like to expect the unexpected.
